Thomas Allom's Istanbul Engravings

Between 1834 and 1836 (during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II), Allom embarked on an extensive journey to the East to enhance his architectural knowledge. During this period, he produced numerous charcoal and watercolor sketches in various parts of Anatolia, most notably in Istanbul.
Upon his return to England, these sketches were transferred onto steel plates by master engravers (a process known as steel engraving). These engravings were then paired with detailed texts authored by Rev. Robert Walsh, the chaplain of the British Embassy at the time, and published in London in 1838 under the title "Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor." The work quickly garnered significant attention and was subsequently printed in other languages, including French and German.
